Phnom Penh, Cambodia On May 15, 2026, Paragon International University hosted its landmark International Conference 2026, titled “Cambodia in the Mekong Nexus: Paths to a Sustainable Future.” The full-day event served as a premier high-level forum, bringing together global researchers, policymakers, government officials, students, and the public to confront the pressing environmental, economic, and governance dynamics shaping the Mekong region.

The core mission of the dialogue was clear: to map out development approaches that guarantee inclusive economic growth while fiercely protecting the environment and safeguarding the region for future generations.

Prof. Dr. Bradley Jensen Murg, University Provost, opened the ceremony by emphasizing Cambodia’s unique positioning. He noted that as a smaller nation, Cambodia stands to benefit immensely from multi-sectoral resources through active regional cooperation.

His Excellency Choup Paris, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Environment, outlined Cambodia’s official framework for sustainable development, which rests on three pillars: economic growth, social well-being, and environmental protection. He noted that while environmental protection is paramount, governments cannot ignore economic realities and financial development needs.

Prof. Dr. Anja Mihr, Academic Director, Global Campus of Human Rights Central Asia at OSCE Academy and Programme Director of the Center on Governance through Human Rights, stressed that true sustainability is impossible without transparent, equitable governance that is free from corruption and political violence. She reminded attendees that discussions surrounding the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) must never overlook human rights, as the two are inherently interconnected.

The conference was chaired by Prof. Dr. Kashif Hasan Khan, who conceived the idea shortly after arriving in Cambodia in August of last year. Drawing from his experience organizing similar academic programs across Central Asia, he recognized Paragon’s potential to spearhead this vital conversation.

The conference featured a pivotal panel discussion titled “Governance, Connectivity and Climate: Rethinking Development in the Mekong Region.” Panelists dove deep into the immediate ecological threats jeopardizing the basin, including:

  • Critical biodiversity loss and destructive, illegal fishing.
  • Escalating marine plastic pollution.
  • The severe downstream environmental impacts of hydropower dams.

The panel concluded with a resounding call to action, emphasizing that the path forward requires absolute transparency, public accountability, active citizen participation, and heightened regional connectivity.

The resounding success of the International Conference 2026 reflects the power of shared vision and rigorous academic collaboration. Paragon International University extends its deepest gratitude to all the esteemed speakers, moderators, cross-border participants, and dedicated organizing partners who contributed to this vital regional milestone.
