MBA Program Spotlight: Balancing Emerging Tech with the Timeless Power of Persuasion

Paragon International University > MBA > MBA Program Spotlight: Balancing Emerging Tech with the Timeless Power of Persuasion

The MBA program at Paragon International University continues to evolve in response to rapid changes in global business, particularly with the rise of digital finance, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies. As highlighted by Julien Lussiez, MBA Program Director, the program integrates these developments while maintaining a strong focus on the core competencies that define effective leadership.

While technology is transforming the tools of modern business, some skills remain timeless. The ability to think clearly, structure ideas, and communicate persuasively will remain essential for leaders regardless of how advanced AI becomes.

These foundational competencies are developed through courses such as Professional Communication and Writing for Graduate Studies, led by Professor Robert Flinn, Distinguished Professor of Creative Writing. With his extensive academic experience and long-standing commitment to student development, Professor Flinn brings a thoughtful and disciplined approach to writing, argumentation, and intellectual clarity,  skills that form the backbone of leadership.

In this interview, Professor Flinn shares his perspective on why writing, persuasion, and academic integrity remain indispensable in the age of AI, and why these capabilities will continue to shape the leaders of tomorrow.

1. In your Professional Communication course, you emphasize analysis and message planning, why are these skills critical for MBA students and future executives?

Audience awareness and message planning are critical in professional communication for both MBA students and working professionals; they enhance clarity, increase engagement, build trust, and help deliver specific, actionable outcomes. They are critical in situations where the message needs to persuade and / or inform, allowing the communicator to tailor their language, tone, and content to meet the audience’s needs and expectations.

    2. Many students see writing as a technical requirement rather than a leadership tool. How would you explain the connection between writing and strategic thinking?

To move students from viewing writing as a mere technical requirement to a leadership tool, it is best to explain writing as “thinking made visible.” While technical writing focuses on grammar and format, strategic writing is the process of structuring thoughts to solve complex problems, clarify ambiguity, and align teams.

    3. In an era where AI can draft emails and reports, what distinguishes a truly effective communicator from someone who simply relies on automated tools?

A truly effective communicator is distinguished not by the volume of their output, but by their ability to foster human connection, nuance, and trust. While AI excels at creating routine, data-driven, and “polite” text, it lacks the ability to understand context, feel empathy, or navigate complex social dynamics.

    4. Your courses place strong emphasis on revision and peer editing. Why is the process of rewriting so important in developing clarity and authority?

Revision and peer editing are foundational to developing high-quality, professional writing because they transform initial “rough” drafts into refined, persuasive, and credible documents. The process of rewriting is essential for moving from raw, self-focused expression to polished, reader-oriented communication.

    5. Academic integrity and proper citation are central in your Writing for Graduate Studies course. How does research ethics relate to professional credibility in business?

Research ethics and academic integrity directly mirror professional credibility by fostering trust, honesty, and accountability. Accurately citing sources and maintaining ethical standards in research prevent plagiarism and fraud, ensuring that professional reports, data analyses, and business decisions are reliable, credible, and legally compliant.

    6. MBA students must often deliver persuasive presentations and business proposals.  What makes a persuasive message truly convincing?

A truly convincing, persuasive message for MBA presentations combines structured data (logic), emotional connection (storytelling), and audience-centric focus. It must clearly articulate a problem, offer a compelling, actionable solution, and build credibility, often utilizing the AIDA model (Attention, Interest, Desire, Action) to motivate decision-makers.

    7. From your experience, what are the most common weaknesses you observe in graduate-     level writing, and how can students overcome them?

Common graduate-level writing weaknesses include lack of focus (overly broad topics), poor argument structure, weak synthesis of literature, and improper citation/formatting. Students often struggle with procrastination and balancing writing with research. Overcome these by outlining, seeking feedback early, writing regularly, and focusing on clarity.

    8. Could you share three practical tips for students or young professionals who want to improve their communication style and express their ideas more clearly?

Improving communication style is a crucial skill for early-career success. Here are three practical tips to help students and young professionals express their ideas more clearly:

(1)”Chunk” Information and Use the “Headline” Method
Before speaking or writing, identify your core message—the “headline”—and share it first. In professional settings, people often have more information than time, so organizing your thoughts into “chunks” (two or three key points) rather than dumping all your information at once is vital.

(2.) Practice Active Listening and “Go to the Balcony”
Actionable Tip: If you disagree, start by summarizing what you heard to show you listened (“What I’m hearing is…”), then ask clarifying questions to avoid misunderstandings.

    (3) Use the “S.P.E.A.K.” Technique for Clarity
To avoid rambling, structure your communication by being Specific, Purposeful, Empathetic, Assertive, and Keep it concise. Replace jargon and long sentences with plain language.

    9. In a multicultural and international business environment, how should leaders adapt their communication styles?

Leaders in multicultural, international environments must adapt by employing clear, empathetic, and inclusive communication, focusing on active listening to bridge cultural gaps. They should tailor their style by adjusting tone and pace, using simple language, fostering trust, and respecting diverse cultural norms regarding hierarchy, time, and feedback.

    10. If you had to give MBA students one long-term habit to develop in order to strengthen their communication skills, what would it be?

The single most effective, long-term habit for MBA students to strengthen communication is practicing active listening. This involves focusing entirely on the speaker to understand their perspective, rather than planning your response, which builds trust, fosters collaboration, and improves empathy.

    Conclusion:

While digital finance, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies continue to reshape the business landscape, leadership will always depend on the ability to think critically and communicate with clarity.

At Paragon International University, the MBA program balances innovation with intellectual rigor. Alongside cutting-edge technological content, courses such as Professional Communication and Writing for Graduate Studies ensure that students develop the analytical discipline, persuasive ability, and ethical standards that define strong and credible leaders.

Technology may evolve, but the capacity to structure ideas, articulate arguments, and influence others will remain a foundational leadership skill.

Applications for the next MBA intake are now open, with classes beginning at the end of March.
